Bluejays come up short against Whitewater (Boys Basketball)

 by Trent Kvalheim, Senior Writer

On Saturday, January 3rd, 2025, the Johnson Creek Bluejays boys basketball team lost to the Whitewater Whippets (5-4) at Whitewater High School, 61-56.

The Bluejays controlled the first half, leading by a score of 30-28 at halftime.  In the second half, Whitewater would storm back, outscoring the Bluejays 33-23.  The Whippets would hold on to secure the win, 61-56.

This game had an amazing performance by Whitewater’s Matthew Carollo (23). The senior guard scored a career-high 35 points, setting a school record with 11 three-pointers on 16 attempts.  Furthermore, the Bluejays held senior Casey Lyon (0) to just 10 points on 3-of-14 shooting.

With Johnson Creek’s defense honed in on Whitewater's leading scorer, Casey Lyon, this left an easier path for Carollo to find open opportunities to get a record.

For the Bluejays, junior Kace Freimund (13) notched a double-double, scoring 17 points and snatching 14 rebounds.  Additionally, senior Brady Fincutter (0) finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and snagging 10 rebounds.

The Whitewater Whippets (6-3) are set to resume their season with a conference game against Monroe on Friday, January 9th, 2026.

For the Johnson Creek Bluejays (5-3), they will look to bounce back in a conference home game against Abundant Life on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
