Bluejays take care of Deerfield in Five Sets (Volleyball)

by Eduardo Freire, Junior Writer

DEERFIELD- On Tuesday, September 22nd, 2026, the Johnson Creek Bluejays varsity volleyball team went to Deerfield and won a very tough game against the Deerfield Demons in five sets, 26-24, 19-25, 25-16, 23-25, 17-15.

In the first set, both teams were tied almost until the end, but the Bluejays overcame the Demons and won the set, 26-24.

Unfortunately, for the Bluejays, in the second set the home team evened the game with lethal serves from Libby Fisher and Loehrke. Although the visitors tied in the beginning, 10-10, it wasn’t enough to win, and the score in the end was 19-25.

The third set started the same as the second, with the Demons dominating; however, the Bluejays tied it at 7-7. After that, with four amazing kills from sophomore Outside Hitter Attiguin Benz, the visitors were able to take the lead and consequently win the set by 25-16.

Both teams are at a very similar level, and it was a nail-biting game. In the fourth set, the Johnson Creek Bluejays were winning 14-9 until the Deerfield Demons went on a five-point service run and had a lot of kills in this set, 22-17; however, the visitors were not ready to give up in the set that could give them the win. Even when the Bluejays almost tied the game, it wasn’t enough to overpower the home team, losing by 23-25.

This game was an absolute cliffhanger. Both teams were tied and were on for only one more set to decide who would come home with this win. The Demons tried and tried; they almost got it, but in the end the Johnson Creek Bluejays proved to be the better team that night and led the entire set for a close win again, 17-15.

For the Deerfield Demons, junior libero Libby Fisher had 8 aces, Sidney Loehrke had 4 aces, and freshman outside hitter Cora Lachance had 12 kills.

For the visitors, Johnson Creek Bluejays, sophomore outside hitter, Attiguin Benz, finished the game with 15 kills, junior libero, Caroline Armstrong, ended with 32 serve receivings, junior middle hitter, Paige Swanson made 3 successful blocks; and junior setter Olivia Frey made 21 serves, with 90.5% of them turning in to a point for the team.

The Johnson Creek Bluejays (11-6) will be competing next against the Parkview Vikings at 7:15 p.m. at Johnson Creek High School on Tuesday, September 29th, 2026.
